Golden Apple (Kallisti)
For this image I was playing around with the idea of the Golden Apple. The golden apple crops up from time to time in Greek mythology. In one famous myth, when Eris (goddess of discord, called Discordia by the Romans) wasn't invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis along with the rest of the pantheon, she decided to stir things up a bit by rolling in a golden apple marked "to the fairest." The three goddesses Athena, Aphrodite & Hera all claimed the title. To be "fair" they called in the human Paris to be the judge. To bribe him, Hera offered him power, Athena wisdom, and Aphrodite offered to give him the most beautiful woman in the human world. Paris chose the woman, who was Helen of Troy, starting off the great Trojan War. This legend is a popular symbol for the Discordian movement. The golden apple also appears in the myth of the race of Atalanta, and the Labors of Herakles.
